When I turned 21, I went to a pizza parlor with friends. I drank some beer and went to my car in the parking lot. The call of nature was upon me and I looked around to see if anyone was present – the coast was clear and I took my pee. Because the far end of parking area was dark, I didn’t see a parked car. Apparently, one of the young female occupants took offense and called the cops. Before I knew it, I was convicted of a lewd act in a public place. I had to register as a sex offender and many years later I was posted on the Megan’s Law website.
I suffered shame and embarrassment because of the conviction and registration status for decades. Fortunately, I kept the same job for all of those years and lived in a remote area. One day after I retired, I came across Kyle Humphrey’s Yellow Page ad and I decided to give him a call. I had no idea a lawyer could help. My case was so old that the clerk of the court couldn’t even find it.
Kyle contacted the Attorney General and my presence on the internet was removed because it didn’t qualify to be on Megan’s Law website. Next, Kyle took my old case to court and my conviction was expunged. My duty to register terminated when the court granted my petition for rehabilitation thanks to Kyle’s extensive research. I wish I had called Kyle many years ago.
Now I don’t have to go through the embarrassment of registering on my birthday. My next birthday will really be a happy one thanks to Kyle and his hardworking staff. - HDH
